Polyurethane SIPs

Murus Polyurethane (PUR), Energy Star qualified, Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are composed of a rigid Polyurethane foam core formed between two sheets of structurally rated OSB (Oriented Strand Board). The resultant panel provides structural strength that is equal or superior to conventional 2x stud construction of a comparable thickness. The Polyurethane foam core provides a solid, uninterrupted, highly energy efficient insulation. Once the SIP seams are sealed with spray foam and cam-locked tightly together, Murus SIPs provide a uniform continuity of structure, insulation and interior and exterior substrate, all in one building component.

EPS SIPs

Murus Company (The) EPS SIPs

Murus EPS SIPs are a high quality, Energy Star qualified, competitively priced alternative to conventional construction, offering superior R-values and energy efficiency, dependable performance, and reduced installation time.

Murus EPS SIPs are manufactured with the same strict attention to detail and concern for quality as our Polyurethane SIPs. The manufacturing process is different from Polyurethane SIP manufacturing in that the EPS foam core is molded and cut to size, then laminated to the OSB skin surfaces with an extremely strong and durable one-part Urethane adhesive. The adhesion is so thorough that separation of the foam from the skins, or "delamination," is simply not an issue.

XPS SIPs

Murus Company (The) XPS SIPs

Murus ENERGY STAR® qualified XPS SIPs provide superior insulating properties with outstanding R-values per inch of thickness. Murus XPS panels are an excellent alternative to EPS where higher R-values and/or thinner cross-sections are required.

The XPS foam manufacturing process consists of extruding the foam into the desired shape and thickness, milling it to assure dimensional uniformity, then pressure-laminating it to the panel skins. An extremely durable one-part structural urethane adhesive is used which is reacted to set while under pressure. The resulting bond is stronger than the materials it laminates together.

Because of their ability to significantly reduce heating and cooling loads, Murus SIPs reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, saving our limited petroleum resources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Murus SIPs are ENERGY STAR qualified, and are ideal for GREEN building projects. Murus PUR and EPS SIPs are recognized by and listed in the Greenspec Directory, an independent agency specializing in qualifying GREEN construction products. This Green Building Certification Guide provides detailed information on how Murus products may contribute to certification under the LEED and NAHB standards.

Polyurethane Foam

Murus Company (The) Polyurethane Foam

Murus Polyurethane foam is a mixture of two types of liquid plastic which are reacted to set by adding a chemical blowing agent. A blowing agent is any substance which is capable of producing a cellular structure in a plastic: in this case, the blowing agent causes the two liquid plastics to foam and expand to make a rigid polyurethane foam. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were an effective blowing agent until it was shown that CFCs have a deleterious effect on the ozone layer. As a result, CFCs have not been produced in or allowed into the U.S. since 1995.

EPS SIP Foam

Murus Company (The) EPS SIP Foam

The Murus EPS foam core is a rigid, foamed plastic with resilient closed cells. Some benefits to Murus EPS foam are its low thermal conductivity and high strength-to-weight ratio, and it does not support bacterial growth. Murus EPS SIP foam cores are recyclable, relieving the strain on our petroleum reserves through efficient reuse of scrap material.

The OSB in Murus SIPs is made from fast-growing, renewable softwood and hardwood species such as pine, poplar, and aspen from self-regenerating forests or plantation-grown trees. Murus's OSB manufacturer is a member of the SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and has pledged their dedication to preserving our forests. Concerned about formaldehyde emissions from OSB? There's no need to be. Read this technical report (pdf) from the Engineered Wood Association.

Pre-Cutting

Adding factory pre-cutting to your Murus SIP order can markedly reduce installation time, and can greatly cut down on site scrap and waste disposal costs.

Panel Pre-cut drawings are developed by Murus using architectural drawings and specifications provided by the builder or client. Once the Panel Pre-cut drawings have been customer-approved, the dimensions for window and door openings, edge routs, bevels, and any other cutting requirements are programmed electronically into Murus’ CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) pre-cutting equipment, and the machine does the rest. Murus’ CNC factory pre-cutting equipment is a fully automated, gantry-style system designed for cutting accuracy. The size of the machine allows whole wall or roof sections to be assembled on the cutting table and cut as one unit to insure alignment integrity from panel to panel. After cutting, the section is disassembled and each panel is labeled to correspond to the Panel Pre-cut drawings for identification and assembly on the jobsite.

Timber Frame & Log Home Use

Log homes are a unique building technique that can be optimized by using Murus SIPs for the roofing structure. Applied over the top of your log rafter, purlin, or truss system, Murus SIPs will provide a clean, integrative interior surface for ease of finishing while providing superior insulation values and energy efficiency for your log home.

Whether you’re planning a timber frame or a log home, Murus precision factory CNC pre-cutting can speed the installation process even more by saving construction time and on-site waste volume and waste disposal expense. Entire wall or roof sections are assembled, and Murus pre-cuts the window and door openings, adjusts the overall panel lengths, and routs the panel foam cores to accommodate inlet plates and nailers. The panels are then disassembled and labeled to correspond with pre-cut drawings (included) for assembly and installation on site.
