FLAMEDXX
|
FLAMEDXX is the first fire retardant Oriented Strand Board (OSB) on the market, protecting families and businesses by slowing the spread of fire and providing a safe and economical alternative to fire retardant plywood.
FLAMEDXX has developed a patent pending process that uses a complex chemical formula that, when applied to OSB, limits the spread of fire. The FLAMEDXX formula & process is less expensive to manufacture than most fire retardant plywood, allowing our customers to save money now and lives later.

There are many advantages by using FLAMEDXX such as:
- It is multi-functional as it can used in homes, schools, hospitals, and other multi-use structures.
- Easy to use as it requires no special tools or skills.
- Can often be used to substitute for non-combustible materials and fire retardant plywoods without affecting building classifications.
- It is less expensive to produce, therefore lowering the cost for customers.
- It is non-corrosive and is engineered to be environmentally safe.
- Has undergone rigorous strength and safety tests by independent and certified laboratories.
- Meets a variety of stringent building codes and classifications.
- Retains fire retardant properties even after cutting or drilling.
- Reduces insurance rates.

Fire Performance
When FLAMEDXX is exposed to fire, non-combustible gas and water vapors are produced and a layer of protective char forms which hinders combustion and insulates the wood against further damage. FLAMEDXX has a low rate of fuel contribution and heat release and it maintains structural integrity longer than other building materials such as steel. Consequently, fire damages and repair costs are minimized.
Flame Spread
FLAMEDXX meets the flame spread requirement of all building codes as determined by a rating of less than 25 (Class A). FLAMEDXX OSB panels have achieved a Class A rating for both the 10 minute & 30 minute ASTM E-84 Tests. Each panel of FLAMEDXX OSB bears the CLASS A mark identifying it as being certified for use as a non-combustible material.
Smoke Toxicity
FLAMEDXX has successfully passed a stringent smoke toxicity test. Smoke produced by FLAMEDXX was no more toxic than smoke produced by untreated wood. FLAMEDXX also complies with all certifications associated with smoke testing.
Hygroscopicity
OSB is naturally hygroscopic, and fire retardants can increase this property from very little to significantly. Thus, there is no such thing as non-hygroscopic OSB. Some fire retardants absorb excessive moisture which can create problems with appearance, surface finishing, and corrosion of metal hardware. However, the FLAMEDXX formulation only slightly increases the hygroscopic properties of untreated OSB.
Corrosion
Historically, OSB has been considered corrosive because of excessive moisture gain at elevated relative humidities. Conventional types of fire retardants have caused corrosion problems and failure in various types of metal hardware and fasteners, and structural components. FLAMEDXX, however, has demonstrated no greater corrosion rates than untreated OSB.

Appearance/Finishing
FLAMEDXX fire retardant OSB can be finished or painted. As with untreated OSB, the OSB must be dry and clean before finishing. FLAMEDXX should only be finished after the structure is enclosed. This allows the moisture content in the OSB to stabilize at an acceptable level. Coating systems should first be tested on sample material and exposed to actual use conditions to determine if the desired effect can be obtained.
Ventilation/Moisture/Heat
Adequate air flow must be provided in OSB roof systems to prevent moisture buildup in the OSB. It is the sole responsibility of the building owner or his agent (builder, architect, engineer, etc.) to insure that ventilation is provided to at least the level required by the appropriate building codes.
Job Site Storage
As with untreated OSB, it is important to keep FLAMEDXX material dry by covering the top of the bundle, storing the material under shelter, elevating the bundle from ground contact, and allowing for air circulation around the OSB. Roof sheathing should be covered as soon as possible after installation.

The chemicals in FLAMEDXX fire retardant OSB are of very low toxicity and will not harm those involved in use and handling of the product. Normal safety and hygiene practices of working with untreated OSB should be followed: wear gloves to avoid splinters, use a dust mask and eye protection when using power tools, and wash hands after working with the product. Tests have shown smoke from FLAMEDXX OSB to be no more toxic than untreated OSB.
Quality Control
Comprehensive QC programs, conducted by third-party agencies, provide assurance that both FLAMEDXX fire retardant chemical and FLAMEDXX OSB are consistently produced to meet performance standards. These checks cover ingredient purchases, formulation composition, and manufacturing procedures. These independent agencies supplement the daily activities of the manufacturer, FLAMEDXX, LLC. Scrutiny of treating plants is equally intense.
Limitations
FLAMEDXX is designed to be used striclty in interior applications, and may only be used in above ground locations, protected from precipitation, regular condensation, extreme humidity, or other wetting. Exposure of FLAMEDXX OSB to these conditions will, over a period of time, reduce its fire retardance.
FLAMEDXX should not be used in damp crawl spaces, other damp areas, or in direct contact with concrete floors or damp concrete or masonry walls.
