Often referred to as sputtering, this process involves coating stainless steel and titanium (in a vacuum) with inorganic material, such as titanium nitrides and ceramics. A range of colors can be achieved through various practices and film thicknesses. Contrarian Metal Resources offers stainless steel and titanium that are colorized using this method, produced by Tsukiboshi Art Company in Japan, which are represented in this binder.

InvariTique®
InvariTique® is solid zinc alloy sheet with a treated finish, having the appearance of years of weathering, designed for use in architectural applications. It lends itself to roofing, but can be used for wall panels, counter tops, coping and trim. When exposed to the elements, it maintains its medium gray, irregular patina, ensuring the original appearance will continue for years to come. Because of zinc's algaecidal and fungicidal properties, it is well suited to damp climates or locations prone to mold and mildew. In arid climates, however, the patina develops a harmless white oxide and may not be visually suitable. Since InvariTique® has no coatings to deteriorate, it requires little maintenance.

InvariTique® with Back Coat
InvariTique® is solid zinc alloy sheet with a treated finish, having the appearance of years of weathering, designed for use in architectural applications. When a back coat is added, traditional venting requirements for pure zinc construction can be eliminated. InvariTique® With Back Coat lends itself to roofing, but can be used for wall panels, counter tops, coping and trim. When exposed to the elements, it maintains its medium gray, irregular patina, ensuring the original appearance will continue for years to come. Because of zinc’s algaecidal and fungicidal properties, it is well suited to damp climates or locations prone to mold and mildew. In arid climates, however, the patina develops a harmless white oxide and may not be visually suitable. Since InvariTique® With Back Coat has no coatings on the exposed surface to deteriorate, it requires little maintenance.

nvariZinc
InvariZinc is solid zinc alloy sheet, with a bright surface, designed for use in architectural applications like countertops and ornamentation. When exposed to the elements or daily use as in a countertop, it develops a medium gray, irregular patina that can be a desirable design element. Because of zinc’s algaecidal and fungicidal properties, it is well suited to damp climates or locations prone to mold and mildew. In arid climates, however, the patina develops in the form of a harmless white oxide and may not be visually suitable. Since InvariZinc has no coatings to deteriorate, it requires little maintenance.

The use of zinc alloy sheet as cladding material for counter- tops, tabletops and kitchen and bar surfaces has always been popular due to its characteristic patina and self-cleansing properties. Recently there has been a revival of interest in this unique surfacing metal that can meet numerous design requirements, ranging from historic restorations to modern industrial themes. While mill finished zinc sheets have a highly reflective surface that can be preserved with clear coatings, most designers opt for the natural look of aged zinc that develops a dull gray, pewter-like patina over time (see Finishing below). Since zinc is one of the softer metals, it lends itself to a distressed look that is normally accomplished through use, but often established during fabrication.
