Zinsser products are widely used in commercial, industrial and residential construction, property and institutional maintenance, and by quality-conscious property owners. Zinsser products can be found virtually anywhere paint is sold. They can be found at more than 70,000 retail outlets across the US and internationally, including home centers, mass merchandisers, hardware stores, paint chains and independent paint and decorating retailers. Zinsser is a division of the RPM Company, a world leader in specialty coatings and sealants, with headquarters located in Somerset, NJ and offices, manufacturing and distribution facilities throughout the United States, as well as in the UK and Australia. This Finish Schedule is furnished only as a guide to select wallcovering installation systems, and is not all-inclusive of available Zinsser products. Although it is written in the CSI format and can be included in its entirety in a master specification, one should review the contents and edit to suit the particular needs of the project and its respective location. Compliance with state and national VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) regulations are listed in the product description and should be taken into consideration. Because these regulations vary greatly around the country and are subject to change, we suggest you verify that products selected meet the requirements of the area in which they are to be used. If the project is located within the OTC, CARB, SCAQMD or other VOC regulated regions; one must comply with the regulations regarding VOC's. It is always recommended that you consult with a Zinsser Sales Representative or call Zinsser's Consumer Affairs Department at 732-469-8100 before finalizing the selection. Technical Data Bulletins and MSDS documents are available online at www.zinsser.com or by phone request. Whatever your project - whatever your challenge. Zinsser's got you covered. ** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** This specification covers removal of wallcovering, repair of damaged drywall and installation of commercial wallcovering. Included are specification of DIF Wallcovering Strippers, Gardz Damaged Surface Sealer, Shieldz Wallcovering Primers and SureGrip Wallcovering Adhesives. In addition to top of the line wallcovering primers and adhesives, this specification includes two innovative proven systems specifically developed to provide long-term protection against mold & mildew growth underneath wallcovering - The Zinsser Plus Mold & Mildew-Proof Commercial Wallcovering Installation System for all types of wallcovering and the Zinsser V.P. (Vapor Permeable) Commercial Wallcovering Installation System for applications of breathable wallcoverings where permeability of the decorative finish is a concern. Both systems are designed to prevent staining and loss of adhesion of wallcovering caused by mold & mildew growth under the wallcovering on the primer film and adhesive. The Systems also inhibit the growth of odor causing microbes under the wallcovering. The benefits of these systems are achieved through use of a mold and mildew-proof wallcovering primer and adhesive that is particularly resistant to mold and mildew growth. These products contain a mildewcide that prevents the growth of mold and mildew on the primer film and adhesive only. The scope of this specification does not encompass or ensure compatibility with all wallcovering types. Before proceeding with installation, testing as outlined in section 1.5 Quality Assurance should be completed and approved by the person(s) responsible for final approval of the installation, otherwise known as the 'Responsible Party'. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| PART 3 | EXECUTION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.1 | PREPARATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | General: Protect carpeting, floors, furniture and adjacent areas. Remove hardware and hardware accessories, plates, machined surfaces, lighting fixtures, and similar items already installed. If removal is impractical or impossible because of size or weight of the item, provide surface-applied protection before surface preparation and wall covering. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.2 | WALLCOVERING REMOVAL | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | General: Apply products according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use applicators and techniques best suited for substrate and type of material being removed. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Wetting Period: Test wall covering with remover/stripper product to determine effective wetting time. If wallcovering is vinyl it will be necessary to score wallcoveing before applying remover/stripper. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. | Wall Covering Removal: Remove loosened wall covering, backing and adhesive. Reapply product for areas that resist easy removal without damaging substrate. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| D. | Adhesive Removal: Remove loosened adhesive. Reapply product for areas that resist easy removal without damaging substrate. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| E. | Surface Cleaning: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | After wallpaper has been removed apply a thin coating of the product to walls to remove any remaining adhesive. After 10 minutes rinse the surfaces and adjoining areas thoroughly with water. Verify that all of the solution is removed. Change rinse water frequently to avoid recontamination of the walls. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. | When mildew is present or likely, use a household mildew cleaner to destroy any mildew that may be present. Rinse walls and allow to dry before priming for scheduled wall covering. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F. | Sand glossy surfaces. Seal marks which may bleed. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| G. | Stains: Apply an appropriate stain killing primer such as Zinsser's B-I-N, Bulls Eye 1-2-3, or Cover-Stain to prevent stains from bleeding into the wallcovering. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| H. | Peeling Paint: Any existing coatings that are not soundly adhered should be removed by the best available means, usually sanding and/or scraping. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I. | Sand loose, peeling facing paper. Tear open bubbles in the drywall facing paper and tear off loose facing paper until only firmly attached paper remains. (Bubbles may be most apparent when the surface is wet.) Replace sections of drywall where the gypsum core is deteriorated, loose or crumbling. Prior to skim coating damaged areas, use GARDZ® High Performace Sealer to seal down damaged drywall facing paper. Patch with appropriate patching material. After dried skim coats have been sanded, re-apply GARDZ to seal skim coats and reduce potential for out-gassing) Patching materials must be dry and fully cured before sealing. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.3 | SURFACE PRIMER/SEALER INSTALLATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | Install wall liner where required by wall covering manufacturer to correct surface defects that would telegraph through the wall covering. Form smooth wrinkle-free surface for finished installation. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Fill paneling grooves, nail holes, gouges, and other surface damage with interior spackling compound prior to priming. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. | Gypsum Wallboard: Remove sanding dust. On drywall that has been skim coated with drywall mud or spackling compound apply two coats of primer/sealer allowing 2 hours between coats. Commercial vinyl wallcovering may require two coats for complete protection of substrate. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.4 | WALL COVERING INSTALLATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | Measure moisture content of surfaces using an electronic moisture meter. Do not apply coverings unless moisture content of surfaces are below the following maximums: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. | Plaster and Gypsum Wallboard: 12 percent. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Comply with wallcovering manufacturers' written installation instructions applicable to products and applications. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. | Apply adhesive, and vinyl wall covering per manufacturer's instructions. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| D. | Use wall covering in roll number sequence. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| E. | Razor trim edges on flat work table. Do not razor cut on gypsum board surfaces. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F. | Apply wall covering smooth, without wrinkles, gaps or overlaps. Eliminate air pockets and ensure full bond to substrate surface. Butt edges tight. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| G. | Horizontal seams are not acceptable. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| H. | Do not seam within 2 inches of internal corners or within 6 inches of external corners. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I. | Install wall covering before installation of bases, cabinets, hardware, or items attached to or spaced slightly from wall surface. Do not install wallcovering more than 1/4 inch below top of resilient base. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| J. | Where wallcovering extends into door frame reveals, or metal wallboard or plaster stops, apply wall covering with contact adhesive within 6 inches of wallcovering termination. Ensure full contact bond. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| K. | Remove excess wet adhesive from seam before proceeding to next wallcovering sheet. Wipe clean with dry cloth. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3.5 | CLEANING | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. | Clean wall coverings in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, including removal of excess adhesive, dust, dirt, and other contaminants. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. | Replace wall plates and accessories removed prior to Work of this Section. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
